Terms of service
Last updated 12 August 2026
These are the terms between you and Proper Drives. We've tried to write them in plain English, because terms nobody can read aren't an agreement — they're a formality. Nothing here takes away rights you have as a consumer under UK law.
Agreeing to these terms
By joining our waitlist, or by using the Proper Drives app or this website, you agree to these terms. If you don’t, please don’t use them. You need to be 16 or over.
How we handle your information is set out in our privacy notice, which forms part of this agreement. What we expect of people in clubs and comments is in our community guidelines, which do too.
Driving comes first
This is the most important section in this document, so it’s near the top.
- You are responsible for your driving. Nothing in Proper Drives is an instruction, a suggestion or an excuse. Obey speed limits and the law, and drive to the conditions.
- Set up before you set off. Start a recording before you move, and leave the phone alone until you’ve stopped. Using a hand-held phone while driving is illegal in the UK.
- Proper Drives is not a navigation app. It gives no turn-by-turn guidance. Route previews and planned routes are sketches, not directions — they may be wrong, out of date, or unsuitable for your vehicle.
- It is not a safety device. There’s no crash detection and no emergency calling. Don’t rely on it for either.
- Don’t use it to organise or record dangerous driving. Racing on a public road, chasing another member, meeting up to drive in a way that endangers people: all of it is a breach of these terms and gets accounts removed.
This is a beta
Proper Drives is pre-launch and distributed to a limited number of testers. It will have bugs. Features will change, and some may be withdrawn. Drives may fail to record or fail to sync — please keep anything you can’t bear to lose somewhere else as well. We’ll do our best, but during the beta we can’t promise the service will be available, uninterrupted or error-free.
Your account
- Use an email address you actually have access to, and keep your password to yourself.
- You’re responsible for what happens under your account. Tell us at hello@properdrives.com if you think someone else is using it.
- One account per person. Don’t impersonate anyone, and don’t claim a username in order to sell it or to pass yourself off as a club you don’t run.
- You can stop using Proper Drives whenever you like, and ask us to delete your account.
What you post stays yours
Your drives, photos, notes, comments and club posts belong to you. We don’t claim ownership of any of it.
To be able to show it to the people you’ve chosen, we need your permission to store it, back it up and display it — so you give us a licence to do those things, limited to running Proper Drives, lasting only as long as you keep the content on the service, and non-exclusive. We won’t use your drives or photos in advertising or marketing without asking you first, every time.
Only post what’s yours to post. Photographs of other people’s cars are usually fine; photographs someone else took usually aren’t.
What we ask of you
The community guidelines have the detail. In short: don’t post content that glorifies dangerous or illegal driving, don’t harass people, don’t post anything unlawful or hateful, don’t advertise at people, and don’t try to break, scrape or overload the service.
If you break these terms we may remove content, suspend or close your account. Where it’s something that can be put right, we’ll normally say what the problem is first — unless the breach is serious enough that we shouldn’t.
What it costs
The beta is free. Recording, Drive Recaps, home zone protection, clubs, runs and challenges are part of the free service and are intended to stay that way.
We plan to offer an optional subscription, Proper Drives Pro, for extras like an unlimited drive archive, richer exports and organiser tools. It isn’t available yet. Pricing shown on this site — £2.99 a month or £24.99 a year — is our intention, not an offer, and may change before it goes on sale.
When it does launch, it will be sold through the App Store, so Apple handles the billing: your subscription renews and is cancelled in your Apple account settings, under Apple’s terms, and refunds are Apple’s to give. Your statutory cancellation rights are unaffected.
Changes to the service and to these terms
We’ll keep improving Proper Drives, which means things will change and occasionally go away. If we’re going to remove something you rely on, or change these terms in a way that matters, we’ll tell you by email first. Carrying on using the app after a change means you accept it; if you’d rather not, you can close your account and take your data with you.
Ending it
You can leave at any time. We can suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, or if we have to for legal reasons — and, giving reasonable notice, if we stop running the service. If we close down, we’ll give you a way to get your drives out first.
Our responsibility to you
We provide Proper Drives with reasonable care and skill, as UK consumer law requires. What we can’t do is take responsibility for how anyone drives, for decisions made on the basis of a route preview, or for content other members post.
We don’t limit our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law doesn’t allow us to limit. Beyond that, and because the service is currently free, our liability to you for anything else is limited to what you have paid us — during the beta, nothing.
Nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights as a consumer. If any part of this document turns out to be unenforceable, the rest of it still stands.
Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and disputes go to the courts of England and Wales — though if you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland you can bring a claim in your own courts instead. Talk to us first: hello@properdrives.com. Most things are fixable by email.
