Proper Drives gives your drives, your car and your crew a private home after the road. Record the drive, keep the route to yourself, and share only the part that’s worth telling.
How it works
The story starts when you park.
Three steps, and only the first one happens while you’re driving. Proper Drives is built for the drive after the drive — the bit where you remember it, share it and plan the next one.
One
Tap Record, then put the phone down.
Recording starts because you started it — there's no automatic tracking watching for a car journey. It keeps going with the screen locked, and shows up on the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island as a glanceable Live Activity: elapsed time, distance, whether it's still running. Nothing to tap at, nothing to read at a junction.
Two
Your route is yours by default.
The full GPS track never leaves your account. Draw a zone around home, work or anywhere else sensitive and the entry and exit get trimmed out of anything you share — including drives you shared before you drew it. Add it tonight, and last Sunday's recap is trimmed too.

Share the story, not the surveillance.
A Drive Recap is a route preview, the car, the distance, how long it took, the day it happened and whatever you want to say about it. Export it as a Story Card for Instagram or WhatsApp, or share it with the clubs you choose — one at a time, never all of them by default.
Privacy by design
Your drive. Your route. Your call.
Most apps that know where you drove treat that as an asset. We treat it as something of yours that we’re holding. Here is the whole of it, with nothing in the small print.
Never shared, whatever you post

We do not sell trip, location or driving-behaviour data to advertisers, insurers or data brokers. There is no plan under which we would — it isn’t how this is meant to pay for itself.

A better home than the group chat.
The run gets organised in WhatsApp, the photos go to Instagram, and by Wednesday the whole thing has scrolled away. A club is a group of people with a shared history — it deserves somewhere that keeps one.

Nothing here rewards driving faster.
That isn’t a policy we could quietly change our minds about later — it’s built into what the app is able to count.
No speed leaderboards. Ever.
No fastest route, no top speed, no acceleration table, no public ranking of how anyone drove. A challenge can count drives, distance or days out and nothing else.
Badges you keep to yourself
Earned for turning up — a first drive, a hundred miles, an early start. There's no screen that shows anyone else's, no streak to break, and nothing that punishes a quiet month.
Nothing that wants your attention
No celebration pops up mid-drive; anything earned waits until you've stopped. Using a hand-held phone while driving is illegal in the UK, and an app for drivers has no business making it feel normal.

Recording drives, keeping them private, joining a club and turning up to its runs are the product. None of that goes behind a paywall — a club with half its members locked out isn’t a club.

Later on, local businesses that genuinely serve drivers — detailers, garages, tyre shops, cafés worth stopping at — may be able to buy a clearly labelled listing. It will never appear while anyone is driving, it will never be targeted using where you’ve been, and no advertiser gets your location data. That is the whole of the advertising plan.

Where we’re up to
Recording, home zones, recaps and Story Cards, clubs, runs and RSVPs, shared feeds, challenges and badges, route planning and live clubmate positions all work today. Photos and stops on a recap, and moderation tools beyond deleting your own comment, are the next things being built. It’s a beta, and it will behave like one.
